Working Parents Can Benefit From The Childcare Tax Credit

If you are a working family or working parent you may be entitled to the Childcare tax credit. This credit allows a deduction to help cover the cost of daycare expenses incurred while the parent or parents were at work. Like every tax credit out there, qualifications must be met. Not every working individual with a dependent can get this deduction but many of them can. You must have a dependent child under the age of 18 or a disabled dependent who receives childcare while you, the primary caretaker, is at work.

You have to claim single, married filing jointly, head of household or qualifying widow(er) in order to take advantage of this benefit. The amount of the credit can be as much as 30 percent of your costs paid to the caretaker. However, the care provider is required to meet particular criteria as well. The daycare provider for your child needs to give you their name, address, phone number and Tax ID or Social Security number for these purposes. It should be mentioned that you cannot pay a dependent to care for a dependent, for example an older sibling cannot provide daycare for a younger sibling.

This is just one credit that may be helpful for working families. There is a child tax credit that allows you up to a certain amount for each child under 17 years of age. Then there is what is called an additional tax credit. Earned income credit is another thing to investigate especially if you do not earn a lot of wages annually. EIC, as it is abbreviated, provides more financial help to families whose income does not go over a certain point. The more children that you have, the higher your level of earned income credit is likely to be.

To learn more about the Childcare tax credit and other deductions available for working parents, visit the IRS site or call them and speak to a tax professional. They can explain to you about the different types of credits available. Also there is plenty of information online about the many tax credits that a person might qualify for. It helps to get every available credit because then you will either owe less taxes or get a bigger refund. Either way, this makes taking the time to ensure you get all the deductions available to you worth it.
